However CS5 came out long before Lion did and who knows if all the places that it expects to be there are still there. I probably would do the installation of CS5 before I did Lion. Of course you don't need to uninstall a previous version.
I just would recommend doing so as a 'clean' install is better than installing over an old, obsolete version. For the last many editions of the creative suite they have each been completely independent. There is no "going over a previous version. Each version stands on its own and is a clean install — as long as you haven't installed that specific version before. And "obsolete" is a pretty relative term. With products as complex as the creative suite there are often features or even whole applications that change between versions.
