What fork oil should i use

Depending on what you ride, and how you ride it, you may have a few options to choose from for replacement fork oil.

Should you go with a lighter oil? Or perhaps a heavier oil? The fork is a vital component of the ride quality of your motorcycle. Inside each fork is valving that controls the compression and rebound of the fork going up and down, or in and out. It does this without regard for temperature, terrain, or what type of motorcycle you choose to ride.

The function is the same. Knowing the function of the fork oil, you should be worried about what oil viscosity is used on your motorcycle. Each offer excellent protection for heat tolerance and damping fade over time, but they also offer a slightly different riding characteristic.

The AMSOIL 10 medium viscosity fork oil is a thicker oil that may be better suited to riding that needs slower compression and rebound. This may be something like a cruiser that you ride cross-country, a sportbike that you race on a closed course, or an ATV you use on your farm.

Both fork oils offer significant performance over bargain brands. This question is tricky to answer with a general number of miles or time in use. Will that be suitable? I use rock oil or silkolene fork oil from motorbike shops. Have done for years across Fox, Marzocchi and RS — all perfectly fine. Unless you are rebuilding the damper unit you can use car oil in the lowers. Its just for lubrication of the lowers.

This is from the Enduro sSeals instructions for the Fox 36 talas rc2. Not sure what fork you have but you should check out the tech section here…. Enduro Tech. Any other reputable brand is acceptable. Note that Fox recommends damper oil. Damper oil is OK, but does not stick to the parts as well as the mulit-viscosity synthetic motor oil. You only need to use fine tuned weights of fork oil in the damper unit itself. By transferring a quantity of oil from one end of the fork to the other through a series of small orifices or valves, the movement of the fork can be controlled.

The more restrictive the valving or more viscous heavier the fluid, the slower the fork will move. So, while the fork spring holds the front end up, it's the hydraulics that keep the fork from excessive bottoming or rebounding. Viscosity is the resistance of fluid to flow. It is measured by flowing a specific quantity of the fluid through a capillary tube called a viscometer. The rate of flow is expressed in square centimeters per second, or more customary, in centistokes cSt.

The Society of Automotive Engineering uses the cSt measurement and converts it to a weight value 30 weight, 40 weight, 50 weight and so on. Those weights can be found on a can of motor oil. The SAE scale follows a very broad viscosity calibration scale. Fork oil weights are derived from the industrial standards used for hydraulic applications, called the Saybolt Seconds Universal SSU.

This measurement uses a similar viscometer arrangement as used to determine a cSt value, but grades the oil using a much more sensitive viscosity calibration scale. It means that the oil's SSU value at degrees C is Then, the flow of the oil is measured at 40 degrees C.

The second numberis the value given to the difference in flow between the two temperatures. This is called the viscosity index VI. It tells how stable the fork oil remains from degrees Fahrenheit up to degrees Fahrenheit or the boiling point of water.

This is important because the higher the VI rating, the more stable the weight of the oil remains when it gets hot. How does this apply to bike forks? The friction created by sliding metal parts and oil flowing back and forth through valves creates heat. The more consistent the weight of the oil remains the less likely the fork's damping is to change as a moto progresses.

If the oil gets hotter and thinner, the forks will get softer and faster. Luckily, the oil in your fork seldom sees temperatures as high as degrees Fahrenheit. The logic applied here is that a good fork oil should have a VI rating of at least Consumers like to shop for oil by weight.
