When do you feed an axolotl

For larvae and junior axolotls, you will likely be feeding them twice a day. For an adult axolotl, you can feed them once every 2 to 3 days. If you provide optimal care for your axolotl, it can live up to 15 years. A sign your axolotl is healthy would be:. However, there are a number of illnesses and injuries that axolotls can sustain. Stress is one of the biggest causes of illness in axolotls. Chronic stress can lead to illness or infection. Common signs of a stressed axolotl would be for them to lose their appetite, refusing to eat normally.

However, the risk you want to manage here is infection. Exposed wounds can quickly become infected, so during this period you need to monitor water parameters and ensure they are stable. In the case of impaction, fridging can encourage fast recovery and help them to eject anything nasty in their digestive system.

Constipation as a result of overfeeding can also cause impaction, which is why adults should only be fed every days at most. Axolotls are able to float around tanks at will, though excessive floating may indicate air bubbles in the gut. Again, fridging can help get rid of this problem.

You should also check your water parameters and adjust them if necessary. Heat-stressed axolotls can develop dangerous bacterial and fungal infections, which is why you should routinely check your water temperature. Axolotls are native to cold water. For that reason, you can use lower temperatures to slow disease and infection. You can use salt baths to treat axolotls suffering from skin infections, which is most effective when used in conjunction with fridging.

Axolotls with fungal infections will benefit from salt bathing. The salt works to kill off any infection, nursing axolotls back to health within a few days.

They are soft-bodied amphibians with permeable skin and no true bones, making them vulnerable to damage easily.

Axolotls tend to be more active at night or in low-light environments and can be wonderful to watch. For this reason, it is not smart to house an axolotl with any other fish, salamander, or shrimp etc, because they like to nibble, nip, and eat whenever they get the chance.

Fully-grown adult axolotls, on the other hand, may live together safely and will rarely attack one another. However, Axolotls are solitary amphibians and will not benefit from having another one in the tank. Axolotls possess the typical features you would expect to find on a salamander larvae: external fills and a caudal fin extending from behind its head to the vent. However, axolotls are neotenic salamanders, meaning they carry traits from their childhood into adulthood.

Most salamanders will lose their gills as they age, but not the axolotl. Some smaller or younger axolotls may only need minutes for example at first. Adult axolotls can eat an entire worm in three minutes, while younger axolotls will consume much less during this time. While you do not want to overfeed your axolotl, you do not want them underfed either.

You must make sure that they are getting enough to eat. If you keep several axolotls, you must ensure each one is getting enough food to survive. Feeding several axolotls is hard work, but you must monitor their feeding habits.

You will certainly go through much trial-and-error to ensure each individual is adequately fed, but it is something you need to do if you plan on keeping several and you want them all to remain healthy. A healthy axolotl can typically survive without food for up to 3 weeks. In other cases, they may only survive for 2 weeks, or if you are fortunate, they may even be able to reach 4 weeks. You must keep feeding them on a recurring and appropriate schedule.

While axolotls may not eat as much as other pets, you still need to consider, monitor and ensure their diet stays balance. You must ensure you neither overfeed nor underfeed them; which can be challenging without a routine and a schedule. Many owners therefore keep a diary or a feeding calendar; and it comes strongly advised that you feed your axolotl on the same days each week for consistency and to ensure you do not get confused or forget. If you need to be away, you will need to arrange with a trusted family member, friend, or neighbor to feed them as and when required.

If your axolotl suddenly loses their appetite, or refuses food after more than a week of feeding, it is possible that something is wrong. Besides, there could be other reasons why they are refusing their food.

So nevertheless, it helps to get an expert opinion on the matter. If an axolotl is experiencing any health issues, they will likely lose their appetite. You may even notice other signs, such as more lethargy or a lack of desire. They may even be more reserved. If you suspect your axolotl is not at their usual best, it is advised to seek out veterinary attention at the earliest opportunity. Axolotls are subtropical, and they have very specific requirements regarding the temperature of the water they need to be in.

Classic signs that they are in too cold water include behavioral changes, sluggishness, and a decreased metabolic rate which means a lower desire for food.

Either way reactions to inappropriate temperatures are a normal physical reaction and not an indication of poor health.
